The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him. Exodus 15:2 ESV
The Lord doesn’t only give us strength. He himself is our strength. Without him we don’t have strength to get through life and all that life throws at us. This verse is referring to the Israelites being led through the Red Sea. Before God opened the sea they were pinned between the sea ahead of them and the Egyptian army behind them. Unless God did something miraculous and out of the ordinary they were doomed. He did come through for them by opening up the Red Sea for them to walk through on dry ground and drowning the Egyptian army after them. In the same way we face situations where we really need God to come through for us, or else we’re doomed. However, we can say he is my strength. He will come through for me because I trust him, and he is completely trustworthy. We are confident because he has already led us out of the kingdom of darkness and into the kingdom of God through Christ, who opened the way for us. When we look back at his work on our behalf he becomes our song. We sing his praises for being our strength at the time when we needed him most.
Knowing what he has done for us we can face everything in life with confidence knowing that he truly is our strength and our song.
