The names of God: Adonai

The mountains melt like wax before the Lord , before the Lord of all the earth.  The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all peoples see his glory.  Psalms 97:5-6 NIV

Adonai, which means Lord or Master, expresses the sovereignty of God over all of creation, including all people. God is hereby exalted to his rightful place where all and everything is subject to him. Nowadays it isn’t common to call someone lord, but in Biblical days it was common to call someone in authority lord. It was understood that if they had authority over your life then you submit to them without questioning their demands and requests. Slaves had no rights and submitted to their masters as a duty, without option.

Adonai expects such submission to him from all of his creation, knowing his absolute rights over all that happens in life in general, and our lives in particular. He is the standard of what is right. Can the clay say to the potter, “Why have you made me like this?” Does not the clay belong to the potter and have the right to mould and make what he wants with it? If it has flaws he has the right to press, beat and reshape it to the way that he wants it.

So Adonai – our Lord and Master – has the right to put us through whatever pleases him. The confidence that we have is that he is moulding and making us into the masterpiece that is for his pleasure. And if it’s for his pleasure then it’s good for us, no matter how difficult the process is that we’re enduring. In his sovereignty he’s never lost control over the circumstances in the world, our country,  our city, or our lives. What and restful assurance to trust in Adonai!
