Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. Isaiah 40:28 NIV
El Olam – the everlasting God – has no beginning nor end, not only of his existence, but of his being and his character. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He does not change like shifting shadows. He is not love one day, and hate the next. He is not righteous the one day, and sinful the next. He is forever constant in his being. He is eternal in his scope – to the ends of the earth. This is human language to describe without limitations. His zeal and energy do not fade and he is forever alert, never growing tired or weary. He isn’t a man that he needs to rest. He is eternally available to all who would call on him in faith. Not only does he not grow tired as in exhaustion, but he does not grow weary of our constant petitions and needs. People grow tired of others who constantly ask for things from them, but not El Olam. He is eternally patient. His character isn’t dependent on his creation, but it is who he is eternally. He doesn’t love if we love him. He loves because love is an integral aspect of his eternal character, which won’t change because of the actions of mortal man. The rock doesn’t move because of the wind, the mountains don’t move because of the rain.
This gives us absolute security as he is always trustworthy and reliable. Only he who is eternal can promise eternal life, and give it. Would we trust a person who changes from day to day, circumstance to circumstance, place to place? Absolutely not! But El Olam is our eternal rock on which our lives are built. As long as we hold on to him in faith, we will be eternally secure.
