So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” Genesis 22:14 NIV
Yahweh Yireh – The Lord will provide – was the prophetic utterance of Abraham after sacrificing a ram in place of his son Isaac on Mount Moriah. On their way up the mountain, Isaac observed that they had the wood and the fire, but asked where the lamb for the offering was. Abraham responded that God himself would provide the lamb. Before he knew the outcome or the way that God would provide, Abraham trusted God implicitly. It is easy to trust God when everything is going well and we have an abundance, but when we are looking at a bleak future with the possible loss of everything and can still say with confidence that the Lord will provide, then we have true faith in him. Jesus said that we should not worry about what we will eat, drink or wear as the Father clothes the flowers of the field, and feeds the birds of the air, and we are more valuable than them. He is always faithful to keep his promises of provision.
God’s provision is more than material and temporary, it’s spiritual and eternal.
The provision of a lamb that Abraham was referring to was the ultimate Lamb of God that was going offer himself as a sacrifice to take away the sins of the world.
It was on Mount Moriah where Solomon built the First Temple in Jerusalem.
Then Solomon began to build the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to his father David. It was on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, the place provided by David. 2 Chronicles 3:1 NIV
Temple worship was about sacrifice for the forgiveness of sin and guilt before God.
Jesus was referred to by John the Baptist as the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29 NIV
Jesus was the Lamb that Abraham had said God himself would provide. In the way that God provided a ram to be sacrificed in the place of Isaac, Jesus was the Lamb who was sacrificed as a sin offering in the place of every one of us. He provided us with a sure salvation through his death on the cross at the place where Abraham said that God would provide. On the mountain of the Lord, it will be provided.
If God was faithful to provide himself so that we might have life, surely we can trust him to provide us with all things in life. He is Yahweh Yireh – The Lord who provides.
Praise God Amen
